In a recent Lab 360 an Engineer came in with a PowerPoint Presentation. It was a 15 slide, 10 minute presentation. A perfectly fine presentation. Here’s how an exchange went during the Lab 360:
Me: Why are you speaking?
Engineer: I’m starting this conference
Me: And what are you trying to do?
Engineer: I’m suppose to welcome people. Get them excited about the conference.
Me: And does this PowerPoint do either of those things?
Engineer (Pause) No. I guess not.
It sure didn’t. The PowerPoint was needlessly long and detailed. It was needless altogether! His task was very simple. Welcome people to the conference and get them excited about the breakouts and speakers.
We worked on his opening in the Lab 360, coming up with great content which he delivered with wonderful energy. And it was no longer than 5 minutes.
Avoid creating extra work for yourself by asking yourself the same questions!
Why am I speaking?
What am I trying to accomplish?
Do I need a PowerPoint to do that?
